Buick Isn’t Just For Old People Anymore

Buick Isn’t Just For Old People Anymore

October 4th, 2011

Anyone who thinks General Motors Co. hasn’t changed for the better since its federally financed bankruptcy in 2009 should test drive a Buick.
Just a few years ago, Buick buyers were those who had been collecting Social Security for at least a few years.
A former Buick public relations guy once told me, half-seriously, the typical occupation of a Buick owner was “retired” and the average age was “dead.”
But the old people division of GM has sprung to life, becoming one of the hottest-selling brands in the United States.
The luxurious Buick Enclave crossover has been attracting fashionable soccer moms for several years. The stunning LaCrosse sedan is a serious competitor to Lexus.
And the sporty (yes, you can now use “sporty” and “Buick” in the same sentence) new Regal GS is regaling auto writers who several years ago wouldn’t have parked a Buick in their driveways for fear of ridicule from their hip neighbors.
I had been thinking that Buick’s turnaround might make for an interesting business school case study, but the lesson is pretty simple: if you’re successful, don’t throw it away.
That’s what Buick (and much of the rest of GM) did over the past few decades.
‘The banker’s hot rod’
Buick was Lexus before Lexus was Lexus.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Buick was known for its combination of tasteful styling and high performance. Its buyers were doctors, lawyers, local bank presidents and other professionals who weren’t earning quite enough money to buy Cadillacs.
Back then, Buick was called “the banker’s hot rod” for its deceptive power under the hood.
Some of the prettiest cars GM ever produced were drawn in Buick’s design studios, including the 1953 Skylark, the 1963 Riviera and the 1938 Y-Job, considered the auto industry’s first concept car.
But Buick took a wrong turn into Blandville in the 1980s, and it nearly destroyed the brand.
When GM threw Oldsmobile and Pontiac on the scrap heap, many consumers thought the company was crazy for dumping them and keeping Buick.
Despite the fact that hardly anyone who wasn’t on Medicare considered a Buick for purchase, the brand did have several things going for it.
Buick held a reputation for reliability and quality. Its cars were sold and serviced by a strong network of dealers. And, as GM executives often pointed out, Buick was still profitable, thanks to the loyalty of its Greatest Generation buyers.
China to the rescue
In a weird twist, Buick likely was saved by China.
When GM decided to enter the Chinese market in the early 1990s, the Communist government, which had to approve the move, demanded the company sell Buicks.
While Americans had long forgotten about Buick’s lost styling and performance attributes, the Chinese hadn’t.
They remembered when Buick was the choice of government and business leaders in their country, including Pu Yi, the last emperor of China.
“In China, Buick was a revered brand,” Bob Lutz, GM’s retired vice chairman, wrote in his new book, “Car Guys vs. Bean Counters.”
Buick is back.

GMC Sierra Crew Cab SLE Pickup Is Worth Test Driving

GMC Sierra Crew Cab SLE Pickup Is Worth Test Driving

September 1st, 2011

Someone once told me that if you’ve ever driven a pickup, that’s pretty much the way all trucks drive.
Apparently, they’ve never driven the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab SLE heavy-duty pickup. I had that pleasure for seven scintillating days.
The all-new Sierra offers innovative comfort and convenience technologies, while the steering and suspension have been upgraded to deliver an improved ride and handling.
I could maneuver this big body on a dime and with a rear vision camera system combined with rear parking sonar, park the Sierra in the tightest spots.
The latest Sierra provides a long list of safety and security features, including head curtain side air bags with rollover protection, dual stage driver and front passenger air bags with passenger sensing system and seat-mounted side-impact air bags for driver and front passenger.
In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Sierra a five-star rating in the side front seat and crash rear seat categories. Four stars were awarded in the frontal driver, crash passenger and rollover categories.
Exterior highlights include a chrome rear bumper, 20-inch chrome clad wheels, bodyside moldings, chrome surround grille, cargo box illumination and solar-ray deep-tinted glass.
Interior amenities include air conditioning, power windows and locks, illuminated vanity mirrors, intermittent windshield wipers, six-gauge dashboard cluster with tachometer and driver information center display.
Four full-sized doors make for easy entrance and exit. Six full-sized adults can ride comfortably in the Sierra and the stereo system sounds like you’re seated in a symphony hall.
I’m not one that is easily impressed, but the 2011 GMC Sierra has a lot working in its favor.
If you’re a truck person, give the new Sierra a test drive soon.

Buick Looking to Get Younger, Adds New Models with Pizzazz

Buick Looking to Get Younger, Adds New Models with Pizzazz

September 1st, 2011

Buick is working hard to shed its image of the “old guy car.” No longer a brand that whisks grandparents to bingo and doctors’ appointments, it now offers luxurious, high-end and even sporty sedans and crossovers aimed at the pre-Medicare generation.
Buick will build on its rebranding over the next few years, redesigning many models and introducing new ones. In all, Buick will retool or introduce six different models starting in 2013, and expect the brand to take on a completely new look by the 2016 model year. With all of these changes Buick will go through, parent company GM hopes to continue attracting a younger demographic, but without alienating Buick’s “traditional” buyer.
2011 Buick Verano: The first compact Buick in more than 20 years, the Verano goes on sale this fall. The Acura TSX-fighter will come standard with GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system, and is based on the same mechanical underpinnings as the Chevy Cruze.
  • 177-hp Ecotec 2.4-liter engine
  • 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels come standard. Optional 18-inch wheels available.
  • Estimated fuel economy: 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway
2013 Buick Encore: Seen as a “baby Enclave,” the Encore five-seat compact crossover is expected to join Buick’s line-up for the 2013 model year. While details are still slim, especially for a vehicle that’s only a year away, here’s what we know:
  • Will be built on Chevy’s Gamma platform, the same one that the new Sonic will be perched on. Translation: It will be small.
  • Expected to compete against Acura’s RDX and the Infiniti EX
2012 Buick Regal: Expected to be launched in the fall, the Regal will have a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine churning out 270 hp, or the option of eAssist. GM is also weighing its options to put a Regal wagon on the road in China and it hasn’t gotten the go-ahead here in the U.S either.
  • Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a six-speed transmission
  • Optional eAssist mild hybrid system available
2012 Buick LaCrosse: Buick’s eAssist, a mild hybrid system, debuts on the 2012 LaCrosse, improving fuel economy by up to 25 percent. We expect eAssist to make its way across all Buick models in the coming years. The LaCrosse will be redesigned and is expected to be made available to the public for the 2013 model year.
  • A new grille, hood, and rear tailgate will be added for 2013
  • 2.4-liter engine will be combined with a small electric motor
2012 Buick Enclave: This three-row crossover first appeared in Buick’s line-up in 2008. Expect a facelift in 2013 and a new generation surfacing around 2015.
2013 Buick Astra: This small compact is expected to be added to Buick’s line-up for the 2013 model year. Buick is weighing its options on bringing a three-door rebadged version of the Opel Astra to the U.S., thus far there’s no definite launch date. Originally planned to be inserted to Saturn’s line-up, the Astra would share a front-drive platform with the Verano.

2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo Is a Winner

EXECUTIVE EDITOR-AUTOWEEK.COM BOB GRITZINGER: Forget everything you ever thought you knew about Buicks, about Regals and about soft American near-luxury sedans. This 2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo does not fit the mold.
Instead, this Regal Turbo is a sporty car to drive, with a turbo-boosted, peppy four-cylinder under the hood, suspension settings and a well-appointed interior.
Buick has run a few superchargers in the past decade, but the last time the division offered a turbo engine was in the 1987 Regal and Regal Grand National, back when performance and Buick went together like Indy and 500. The last manual, Buick reminds us, was in the utterly forgettable 1990 Skylark, and never has Buick offered a turbo-engine-and-manual-trans combination.
Here's what: General Motors has been cloning Buicks from Opels for a few years now, with the LaCrosse and the Regal as the primary beneficiaries. Now GM is daring to take it one step further, to push Buick outside the comfort zone and into a new world where Buick stands for something more than rolling lounge chair. With the Turbo manual, the company nails it.
The car is nothing short of astounding to drive and the steering wheel, pedals and shifter fall right where you want them.
Punching up sport mode gets you a noticeably dialed-up suspension and steering response, where actual road feel is transmitted into the cabin and up through the steering wheel. Stability controls and throttle response also are modified. The effect is evident, with road imperfections telegraphed into the cabin, along with how the suspension is responding under hard cornering and aggressive driving.
This car is a capable competitor to the Acura TSX, but is more handsome.
MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: The new Regal is as stylish and exciting as I would have ever dreamed.
This turbo Regal indeed struck me as a skilled, efficient and nice-looking cruiser more than a serious sports sedan.
Power delivery is smooth the car stops well, I was comfortable behind the wheel and I was able to find a good driving position easily.
Overall, Buick has a winner here, and I suspect most potential buyers will enjoy a test drive in it more than enough to sell them on taking it home, especially if they fall for the nice design.
2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo
  • Drivetrain: 2.0-liter turbocharged I4; FWD, six-speed manual
  • Output: 220 hp @ 5,300 rpm, 258 lb-ft @ 2,000 rpm
  • Curb Weight: 3,768 lb
  • Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 26/20.9 mpg
  • Options: T07 optional equipment including rear-seat-mounted airbags, power sunroof, interactive drive control system with sport and tour modes, 19-inch alloy wheels, HID headlamps, premium nine-speaker sound system and audio system with navigation and single CD/DVD player
Sincerely,
The Borcherding Team

The Buick Enclave is a Head Turner

The 2011 Buick Enclave's smooth ride, upscale interior, and stylish looks make this an easy choice for both Tiger and our greater Cincinnati Buick customers, who are looking for a luxury SUV.
This year Buick introduced standard 19 inch wheels and even optional 20 inch chrome wheels for the Buick Enclave CXL2 model, taking "stylish" to a new level.  With plenty of room for 8 people, the Enclave's seating is very comfortable, and heated front seats are standard on the Enclave CXL models.  There is even a seat cooling function on the 2011 Buick Enclave CXL2 model, which is great for those sticky Cincinnati summer days.
Navigation (with a backup camera) is an option that we strongly consider, as well as the optional audio system with rear seat entertainment (especially if you have kids).  OnStar, tilt and telescopic steering, and tri-zone automatic climate control are standard in this luxury SUV, and you will ride in comfort.
The deciding factor for most is how well the Buick Enclave drives - it is incredibly smooth, quiet, and fun to drive, and we s trongly encourage you to test drive a new Buick Enclave forsale at our Borcherding Buick GMC store located in the Kings Auto Mall, serving South Lebanon, Mason, Hamilton, and the greater Cincinnati area.
