What about the GMC Yukon

Buyers’ tastes in large SUVs have changed over the years, and the GMC Yukon has changed with them. Introduced in the early ’90s, the full-size Yukon sport-utility has gone from being a two-door 4×4 with a maximum passenger capacity of six to a four-door SUV with a choice of two- or four-wheel drive and seating for up to nine. Early Yukons were fairly basic on the inside, but later models offer numerous amenities, particularly the leather-lined Yukon Denali model. Road manners have improved greatly over the years, as it became apparent to GMC that Yukon buyers spend most of their time on pavement.
Some things haven’t changed, though. The Yukon has always been a spacious vehicle that balances comfortable passenger accommodations with above-average cargo room. In addition, it has always used body-on-frame construction, providing it with a stout foundation for towing. A succession of strong V8s has resulted in impressive trailer ratings over the years, as well as ample acceleration in just about any situation. Now more refined than ever before, the GMC Yukon is one of the better full-size SUVs on the market for families who require a roomy, powerful vehicle that doesn’t skimp on utility.
Current GMC Yukon
The GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV that rides on a stiff, fully boxed frame. The ride is smooth and quiet, while handling is reasonably secure for a 5,500-pound vehicle. Inside, the dash has a sleek, modern design, and materials are attractive and mostly of good quality. Numerous seating configurations can accommodate anywhere from five to nine passengers, depending on the trim level and options you select.
The basic trim structure includes SLE, SLT and Denali models, though numerous package options allow for considerable variation within the lower trim levels. Yukon SLE models come with all the essentials, including tri-zone air-conditioning, a CD player and full power accessories, while the SLT should be your pick if you’re looking for extras like leather upholstery and automatic climate control. Buyers can choose either 2WD or 4WD on both the SLE and SLT, which come standard with a 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8. The upper-crust Yukon Denali comes with a full load of amenities as well as a larger 6.2-liter V8 good for an impressive 403 hp — same as the Cadillac Escalade.
In reviews, we’ve been impressed by the Yukon’s combination of utility and comfort, especially given its humble pickup-truck underpinnings. However, its hefty curb weight takes a toll on fuel economy, acceleration, braking and handling, particularly under the burden of heavier passenger/cargo loads. Additionally, its third-row seat lacks a fold-flat feature and is difficult to remove — as such, a Toyota Sequoia or big crossover like GMC’s Acadia is better for carrying passengers. But if you need the Yukon’s outsized towing and hauling capabilities, it’s one of the best of its breed.

Borcherding New blog post alert: Powertrain Innovation Comes Standard on 2013 Regal

STANDARD EASSIST, OPTIONAL TURBOCHARGING CONTINUE FORWARD-THINKING POWERTRAIN APPROACH

DETROIT – The 2013 Buick Regal luxury sport sedan arrives at dealerships this fall with a standard advanced eAssist powertrain and 36 highway mpg. Two powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines give Regal one of the most technologically advanced engine ranges in the brand’s history.
“With eAssist, Buick is redefining what a ‘conventional powertrain’ means to customers,” said eAssist global chief engineer Stephen Poulos. “It changes the fuel economy – but not the experience – for the 97 percent of new car buyers who aren’t buying hybrids.”
Where a hybrid vehicle requires a complex system of large, heavy batteries and electric motors, BuickeAssist uses a compact lithium-ion battery and a small electric motor/generator in place of an alternator to achieve an EPA-estimated 36 highway mpg for both the Regal and the LaCrosse luxury sedans.
The three main advantages of the eAssist system are its stop/start functionality, which turns the engine off when the vehicle is at rest; regenerative braking that gathers and stores energy that would otherwise be lost during braking, and an electric motor assist that reduces the gas engine’s work during acceleration or on inclines.
“It takes advantage of the best parts of a hybrid, and eAssist is now standard equipment for Regal,” said Poulos. “These new functions happen seamlessly, a requirement for Buick drivers who demand a refined driving experience. They’ll really only notice a difference at the pump.”
Buyers interested in more acceleration can choose from a no-cost option of a 220-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine or the 270-hp Regal GS, both with variable valve timing and direct injection. In addition to one of the most power-dense engines ever certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers, the GS offers high-performance Brembo brakes, HiPer strut suspension technology and unique design cues inside and out.
Both Regal Turbo and Regal GS are offered with automatic or manual transmissions; Regal with eAssist is available exclusively with a six-speed automatic.
The Buick Regal name, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013, is a powertrain innovation pioneer. In 1975, it was the only mid-size vehicle in the United States to forego a standard V-8 engine for a more efficient V-6, while remaining competitive in performance. Three years later, the Regal employed a turbocharger.
“In 1978, Buick was the only mainstream brand offering a turbocharged engine,” said GM Heritage Center Manager Greg Wallace. “Only small, performance-oriented brands like Porsche and Saab were experimenting with the same technology at the time. It was very progressive of Buick to offer a turbocharged V-6 in a mid-size luxury coupe in the late ‘70s.”
Regal powertrain engineers continued that innovation 19 years later, when the 1997 Buick Regal GS debuted with the brand’s first supercharged V-6, rated at 240 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It was among the most powerful and efficient vehicles in its segment and still achieved 28 highway mpg.
Today’s Buick Regal combines sport sedan handling with intelligent powertrain technologies. Regal with eAssist offers five more highway mpg than an Acura TSX and six more than a Volvo S60, while the Regal Turbo and Regal GS offer more power than turbocharged four-cylinder engines from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen.

The Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan introduced Buick’s reinvented passenger sedan lineup that now includes the Regal and Verano. Its sculpted design, craftsmanship, premium materials and advanced technologies have helped change consumers’ perceptions about Buick.
LaCrosse is available in a five trim levels, including LaCrosse (1SB), Leather (1SL), Premium I (1SP), Premium II (1SR) and Touring (1ST) trim levels.
LaCrosse offers two powertrains: an Ecotec 2.4L engine with eAssist light electrification technology (standard on 1SB and 1SL) that achieves an EPA-estimated 36 mpg on the highway; or an efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with E85 capability (available on 1SB and 1SL and standard on 1SP, 1SR and 1ST.) LaCrosse is available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
Buick’s easy-to-use IntelliLink color touch radio that debuted last year on the LaCrosse is now also available in combination with GPS-enabled navigation for 2013. Buick IntelliLink uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver’s smart phone – via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls – to an eight-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch-screen display radio.
IntelliLink also enables streaming stereo audio from the phone through services such as PANDORA ®Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio ®.
Later in the model year, XM Travel Link (SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription required) will be available. It includes refueling locations with pricing information, weather and movie theater locations.
Buick IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
LaCrosse design
Designed to represent modern elegance, the LaCrosse exterior and interior are a balance of contrasts: The outside is characterized by taut lines with sensuous accents and surfaces. Inside, a flowing, uninterrupted design theme wraps around the instrument and door panels. It includes smoked chrome accents, warm wood, first-class leather and materials combined with ice blue ambient lighting to create an inviting environment.
Meticulous attention to detail includes tight gap tolerances, analog instrument cluster, chrome offset by dark woodgrain accents, and contrasting stitching on the instrument panel.
Buick’s signature QuietTuning – a Buick-exclusive engineering process to reduce, block and absorb interior noise – provides a distraction-free cabin.

Efficient, proven powertrains, including eAssist
The LaCrosse is equipped with a choice of two efficient engines: the standard Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder engine with e Assist light electrification technology, rated at 182 horsepower (136 kW); and an available 3.6L V-6 that is E85 ethanol-capable. Both are mated to efficient six-speed transmissions.
LaCrosse was the first GM passenger car to offer eAssist: It achieves EPA fuel economy of 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway using a lithium-ion battery system and electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking capability. Instead of providing all-electric propulsion, the system provides power assistance to the internal combustion engine.
The e Assist system also allows the engine to shut down fuel delivery in certain deceleration situations, which saves additional fuel. While in fuel shut-off mode, the motor-generator unit continues spinning along with the engine to provide immediate and smooth take-off power when the driver presses the accelerator.
Other fuel-saving attributes on the LaCrosse with eAssist include aerodynamic features such as front lower active grille shutters and underbody aero panels, as well as low rolling-resistance tires and single-outlet hidden exhaust.
A next-generation six-speed transmission is paired with the Ecotec 2.4L engine with eAssist . Changes to clutch controls and hardware provide reduced spin losses while improving shift response and time. An auxiliary, electric-driven oil pump keeps the transmission primed and fluid flowing when the engine shuts down at a stop.
An efficient, 3.6L direct-injected V-6 is available on 1SB and 1SL, and standard on 1SP, 1SR and 1ST. Introduced to LaCrosse in the 2012 model year, it delivers an SAE-certified 303 horsepower (226 kW) at 6,800 rpm.
LaCrosse ride and handling
All LaCrosse models are equipped with technologies that help provide exceptional ride and handling and vehicle control.
An available all-wheel-drive system (available on 1SL and 1SP) provides full-time function. The system automatically decides how to distribute torque based on vehicle speed, throttle position and individual wheel slip, and it is integrated with the electronic traction control system to provide outstanding capability in inclement weather.
Four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS and intelligent brake assist include large front discs and solid rear discs with lightweight, aluminum-body calipers at each corner. Under heavy braking; the system senses the severity of a braking situation and applies additional pressure when needed.
HiPer Strut on 1SR and 1ST equipment packages is a unique front suspension design that improves ride and handling by reducing torque steer; improving vehicle sensitivity to tire irregularities and wheel balance; more linear and communicative steering through improved camber control; and improved impact isolation on bumps and rough surfaces.
For 2013, electric power steering replaces the hydraulic power steering system on front-wheel-drive LaCrosse models equipped with the 3.6L V-6 engine.
The LaCrosse Touring Package also includes real-time damping and Sport Mode Selectivity, which uses four electronically controlled dampers to constantly “read” the road and make adjustments within milliseconds.
LaCrosse is offered with a family of 17-inch, 18-inch and 19-inch wheels.
  • LaCrosse with eAssist: Standard 17-inch machined alloy wheels and low rolling-resistance tires.
  • LaCrosse with 3.6L V-6 (1SB, 1SL 1SP): Standard 18-inch machined-face painted alloy
  • LaCrosse 3.6L V-6 (1SR): Standard chrome-plated wheel (available on 1SL, 1SP with V-6)
  • LaCrosse 3.6L V-6 (1ST): Standard 19-inch nine-spoke painted, machined alloy.
LaCrosse safety and crash-avoidance features
LaCrosse offers standard and available safety features designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash. When testing the 2011 LaCrosse, the federal government gave the LaCrosse a top safety score of five stars. Safety-enhancing features include:
  • Six standard air bags including dual-stage frontal and side-impact air bags
  • Available rear-seat thorax air bags
  • Three-point safety belts in all seating positions and a ir bag passenger sensing system to detect the presence of a small adult or child in the front passenger seat.
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control to help mitigate rollover crashes, and traction control
  • Four-wheel anti-lock brakes with Intelligent Brake Assist
  • Available ultrasonic rear parking assist
  • Available Side Blind Zone Alert technology that notifies the driver if a vehicle in the adjacent lane is traveling in the driver’s blind spot. The available rearview camera features a display in the navigation system screen
  • Standard tire pressure monitoring system.
OnStar details
Six months of OnStar Directions and Connections service is standard on LaCrosse. OnStar is the global leading provider of connected safety, security and mobility solutions and advanced information technology.
OnStar’s RemoteLink Mobile App allows smartphone users to control vehicle functions, access vehicle information and send directions directly to the vehicle. A new, opt-in service called FamilyLink allows subscribers to stay connected to loved ones by checking the location of their vehicle online or by signing up for vehicle location alerts.
LaCrosse features new OnStar button icons. Drivers will notice an updated look for the Hands-Free Calling button, blue OnStar button and red Emergency button.

2013 GMC Acadia a Closer Look

2013 GMC Acadia

For automakers, the prospect of freshening up a successful model can be daunting. Focus on only the minutiae, and your efforts may go unnoticed by the buying public; change too much, and you risk alienating your core customer base. Considering that 2011 was the most successful sales year for the Acadia since its 2007 debut, we understand why GMC made few obvious changes in this restyle.

Acadia V1.1
For the latest incarnation of this three-row crossover, the softly rounded nose and recessed grille of the outgoing model have been replaced by a comparatively upright three-slot affair with sharper creases. Standard diffused LED running lamps make their first Acadia appearance and are paired with both the standard projector-beam and optional HID headlamps. Aft, a new taillight treatment echoes the look of the front lamps. The rear glass gets a wraparound look that appears to have been donated by the now-defunct Saturn Outlook, and it’s capped by a new spoiler. As with the outgoing Acadia, wheels come in either 18- or 19-inch varieties, although the designs have been updated.
Power in all Acadias comes from the same 3.6-liter V-6 used in the 2012 model, all 288 of its horsepower now routed through a “next-generation” six-speed automatic said to have better shift response and improved drivability. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive remains an option. Mileage remains unchanged at 17 city mpg and 24 highway for front-drivers or 16/23 when equipped with AWD.
First-Class Upgrade
As seems to be the trend these days, the Acadia’s interior now employs so-called “upgraded soft-touch materials”—this was easily the most needed improvement on the otherwise-competent and comfortable crossover. The upgrade is complemented by ambient red lighting on the dashboard and a standard rearview camera. High-zoot SLT models get aluminum accents on the center console, doors, and dash because nothing says “I’ve made it” like random applications of an alloy material.

Speaking of high-zoot, the Denali edition returns for 2013 with many of the same premium features as before: 20-inch wheels, chrome accents, a power rear liftgate, heated and cooled front seats, and a special “acoustic package” designed to keep road noise to a minimum.
The 2013 Acadia and its Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse brethren will be the first vehicles available with a front center airbag. It’s designed to prevent the driver and passenger from colliding in the event of a side-impact crash. Six months of OnStar’s Directions and Connections service comes standard on all 2013 Acadias, and radar-based rear- and side-alert warning systems will be optional.
Sidestepping the Suburban Stigma
While we contend that most crossovers can’t carry anything or anyone that a minivan couldn’t handle efficiently, they so far seem to have escaped the wrath of the self-appointed tastemakers responsible for thinning the herd of minivans that once proudly roamed the suburban landscape. Not wanting to tempt fate, GMC hasn’t made big changes for the big Acadia, and we expect similar subtle upgrades to be applied to its Buick and Chevy counterparts for 2013 as well. The updated Acadia will go on sale in the fall of this year.

2013 GMC Terrain Denali to start at $34,525

GMC has broadened its blinged-out Denali line to include the smaller Terrain crossover for the 2013 model year. We're getting our first stint behind the wheel of the Denali-fied Terrain this week, and while we'll have our full report ready in the not-too-distant future, we can share this bit of news right now: The newest member of the Terrain family will officially be priced from $34,525 – not including (*)$825 for destination – when it goes on sale in the third quarter of this year.

That coin will get you a Denali with GM's well-received 2.4-liter inline-four and front-wheel drive, and this top-shelf Terrain comes standard with things like GMC's Intellilink infotainment system, a programmable power liftgate, an eight-way power driver's seat and new dual-flow dampers for the front suspension. All-wheel drive can be had for an additional $1,750.

The big change for the 2013 Denali model is the availability of GM's 301-horsepower direct-injected 3.6-liter V6, available with both front- and all-wheel drive. Opting for the V6 will cost you $1,500, though that price also includes an upgrade to 19-inch chrome clad wheels versus the standard 18-inch rollers.

Nine New Models in Next 12 Months for Buick and GMC

DETROIT – Buick and GMC told dealers today that it will introduce nine new or significantly updated models in the next 12 months, starting with the new Buick Enclave luxury crossover SUV and GMC Acadia crossover SUV  this fall.
The new Buick Encore small luxury crossover, which will be priced at $24,950 including a $750 destination charge, arrives in early 2013. A Buick Regal luxury sport sedanBuick LaCrosse luxury sedanGMC Sierra and Sierra HD full-size pickups, as well as GMC Yukon and Yukon XL full-size SUVs will arrive next year.
In addition to these nine models, GMC will offer luxury-appointed Denali versions of its four upcoming vehicles and a new 2.0L turbocharged powertrain will be available in the Buick Verano this year.
By the end of 2013, the oldest non-commercial models in a Buick/GMC showroom will be the Buick Verano luxury sedan and GMC Terrain small SUV. Verano has been in dealer showrooms for less than a year and has gained sales volume every month since launch. Terrain arrived as a 2010 model and is on pace for its best sales year ever in 2012. A new Denali luxury trim level recently was added.
GMC also announced the return of the GMC Canyon midsize pickup as an all-new model to be built in Wentzville, Mo. Arrival timing will be announced later.
“While we continue to make strong progress in fuel economy gains on our full-size trucks, we know that there is a group of customers who want the functionality of a truck but may not need full-size pickup,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC Marketing. “We believe that introducing a new, agile and efficient mid-size Canyon will meet the needs of many pickup buyers.”
Buick and GMC have grown together as distinctly different but complementary brands. Together, they have sold more than 400,000 vehicles so far this year, a pace that should allow each brand to achieve a third consecutive year of sales gains.
“We’re not only selling more vehicles, we’re bringing new customers to the Buick and GMC showroom,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “Both brands report more than 40 percent conquest sales. Buick was the only automotive brand in the United States to reduce the average age of its buyer during the past five years, and GMC continues to attract more female buyers and – with Denali vehicles – more import and luxury owners.
Overall, General Motors will have 70 percent all-new or significantly refreshed products across its four U.S. brands in 2012-2013.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo rated at 31 mpg highway

The Environmental Protection Agency has released official fuel economy ratings for the 2013 Buick Verano Turbo. When equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, the sedan returns 20 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg highway. More importantly, it manages 24 mpg combined. Those figures put it at exactly 1 mpg behind the base model's naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder and its six-speed automatic in every category.

The Verano Turbo also ties the larger Regal GS with the same drivetrain in city and combined mileage, but loses out to its bigger brother on the highway front by 1 mpg. That's despite the fact that that the Regal Turbo tips the scales at a full 371 pounds heavier than the forced-induction Verano. The slimmer waistline on the Verano does pay dividends in the 0-60 sprint, however. The smaller Buick clicks off the run in 6.2 seconds, a full half-second quicker than the Regal GS.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo Priced at $29,990

DETROIT – The 2013 Buick Verano Turbo luxury sedan will be priced at $29,990, including a destination charge of $885. The turbocharged Verano uses an Ecotec 2.0L four-cylinder engine with direct injection and continuously variable valve timing to produce an SAE-certified 250 horsepower (187 kW) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque at 2000 rpm.

When the Verano Turbo arrives at dealerships this fall, buyers will get both performance and fuel efficiency with 0-60 mph acceleration in an estimated 6.2 seconds and EPA-estimated 20/31 mpg ratings with a six-speed manual transmission available as a no-cost option. Fuel economy ratings for the standard six-speed automatic will be announced closer to production.

Verano Turbo will offer more power and better fuel efficiency than the competition. A 2012 Lexus IS250 is rated at 204 horsepower, with fuel efficiency estimates of 19/28 mpg with a manual transmission.

In addition to its 2.0L engine, dual exhaust, sport pedals and rear spoiler, standard equipment for the Verano Turbo includes IntelliLink connectivity, a Bose 9-speaker audio system, leather-appointed upholstery, push-button start, rear park assist and rearview camera, radar-based side blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. A power sunroof and navigation are optional.

"Buick Verano continues to build momentum in the marketplace with eight straight months of sales increases since launch," said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick marketing. "The new Verano Turbo increases the performance of an already capable luxury sedan while continuing to offer customers the smart, purposeful technology they expect."

Verano sales began in late November, 2011 with a 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission and standard voice-activated IntelliLink. For 2013, a rearview camera is standard across all Verano models.

With the arrival of this new model, Buick will offer three different models with turbocharged engines and optional six-speed manual transmissions, including the Regal Turbo and Regal GS luxury sport sedans. The 2013 Buick Encore luxury crossover, on sale early next year, will feature a standard turbocharged engine.

Buick and GMC Bring GM's Vision to People at the Front Line

This week, Buick and GMC are bringing in over 1,000 dealership sales and service consultants for a behind the scenes look at how GM designs, builds and tests the world’s best vehicles. The Buick and GMC VIP Experience, now in its third year, is being held this week in Michigan at GM’s World Headquarters, Milford Proving Grounds and Lansing Delta Township (LDT) Stamping and Assembly Plant.
Yesterday, I attended the Product Experience events held at the Milford Proving Grounds which allowed attendees to learn about and test new Buick and GMC models against key competitors. The event kicked off with a keynote address from GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson. He said, “We are not playing for the next year, but for the next 30 years.” He pointed out that GM has accelerated by billions in our investment in new products just this year. With his desire to make GM great again, he asked that each of us be “all in” each and every day with the goal of transforming the company back into the American success story.
Akerson’s address challenged attendees to put the customer at the forefront of everything we do. He also highlighted the recent success experienced by the Buick and GMC brands.
  • Buick has nearly doubled in customer consideration over the last 12 months out in the marketplace.
  • GMC customers list style, quality and value as their top reasons for purchasing – a huge honor and accomplishment for any brand.
  • Buick and GMC dealerships now have a consistent and upscale design in dealership facilities from  coast-to-coast
Following Akerson’s keynote address, attendees were sent out to the actual testing tracks of the proving grounds to experience the products first hand.
On a city course, they drove the 2013 Buick Encore, a sophisticated, quiet, good looking and capable small luxury SUV that will be introduced to the market early next year and is sure to be a segment defining hit.  On the ride and handling loop, they experienced the new 2013 GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, which are both expected to increase their already high 50 percent conquest sales rate. Additionally, on the other half of the ride and handling loop, they drove the 250 horsepower (hp) Verano Turbo boasting more power and speed than Acura ILX and Audi A3.
There was also a little drag racing involved.  On the 7.2 percent grade, they were able to drag race Sierra HDs towing 7,000 lb. trailers head to head against Ford and Dodge trucks. The new 3.6L V6 engine in the 2013 GMC Terrain was also put to the test against a V6 Dodge Challenge and Ford Edge Sport. The 301 hp high-feature V6 engine was fast enough to consistently beat both vehicles in timed 1/8 mile drag races on Black Lake.
Attendees also toured the LDT Stamping and Assembly Plant. This plant is a LEED certified plant, making it one of the most environmentally friendly plants in the world. Additionally, they build the world class Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia models. This behind the scenes look at how our vehicles are built really provided the attendees with a great appreciation for the quality and precision that go into each and every product.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late To Change Your Wiper Blades

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late To Change Your Wiper Blades

Clear vision is essential to safe driving. Neglect the wiper blades — the part of your car responsible for keeping your vision clear – and you may find yourself actually needing the traction control, anti-lock brakes, dynamic stability control and airbags as you crash into what you can’t see.
A clean windshield is not only useful during rain, sleet and snow. How many times have you experienced a windshield that is smeared with insects, bird droppings, road tar or other messy deposits? Removing such dirt with worn wiper blades is nearly impossible. Usually, you wind up smearing the mess and obscuring your vision even more. If you change your blades regularly, you can avoid these problems and keep your eyes on the road.
Generally, a blade will show physical wear signs like cracking or discoloration. Another way to know is by the quality of the wipe. Streaking or un-wiped areas are a dead giveaway. In addition, if the blades make noise or chattering sounds, then they need to be replaced. However, if you change your blades frequently, you won’t have to examine your blades looking for these signs of possible failure.
Blades can be easily damaged by snow scrapers and ice during the winter but the sun is just as damaging to a blade in the summer.
By simply doing a little preventative maintenance, you can avoid these uncomfortable situations. Wiper blades should be treated the way you treat engine oil — you don’t wait until you have engine trouble before you change your oil.
How often should you replace your blades?
The National Highway Transportation Board recommends that drivers change their wiper blades every year, however the average vehicle owner replaces his/her wiper blades only once every two and a half years. “Most people wait until they are in a downpour and nearly drive off the road before they are convinced it’s time to change blades,” says Jenifer Maddox, brand manager for PEAK Automotive Products. Some blades, such as Optix Wiper Blades, even come with simple connector systems that make installing the blades on any vehicle a snap.
So if you’ve been procrastinating about changing your windshield wiper blades, take a few minutes today to change them.

The 2012 Buick Verano Proves GM is on The Right Track

The 2012 Buick Verano offers further proof that GM is on the right track

For anyone who keeps up with new car reviews, you may notice that GM has been on the up-swing, bringing relevant, value-packed, fun-to drive vehicles back to the American marketplace.
After a week and 700 miles, I can honestly say our time in the 2012 Buick Verano was like a great first date. Comfortable, enjoyable, and particularly memorable, I find ourselves repeatedly singing the praises of its invigorating character.
How does the Buick name manage to suddenly smash its geriatric stereotype and target its product at a younger demographic?
The magic behind the formula lies primarily within the chassis, which is shared with the European market Opel Astra.
Up front sits a pair of decoupled MacPherson struts, with side-loaded modules, tuned coil springs, a hollow stabilizer bar, and hydraulic ride bushings.
In the rear, the Verano utilizes a specifically adapted torsion beam setup, with a double-walled, U-shaped profile, and a tunable control arm (Z-link).
The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system possesses a quick ratio of 15.5:1, and requires barely more than two turns, lock-to-lock.
This particular setup translates to stunningly rapid transitional response, and a playful character which begs you to take freeway off-ramps at super-legal speeds.
Under the hood, the Verano’s 2.4-L four-cylinder Ecotec power plant features direct fuel injection technology, as well as directed oil jets for each piston.
The Ecotec provided adequate power in most situations, save for steep uphill grades and rapid highway passing maneuvers.
Enthusiasts should not fear, however, as Buick promises a 250 HP, turbocharged version with a six-speed manual transmission is coming later this year.
I did find the naturally-aspirated Ecotec’s Hydra-Matic 6T45 six-speed automatic transmission a willing and responsive companion.
Plant your right foot to the floor, and the Hydra-Matic responds with lightning-fast shifts, keeping the engine well within its power band.
Overall, the 2012 Buick Verano provided a thoroughly unexpected level of driving enjoyment. Satisfyingly, the typical Buick virtues of quietness, refinement, and value were evermore present in our $27,345 1SL tester.
Keeping a laser-beam focus on competing in a tough market segment, the entry-level-luxury Verano is on our short list for most recommended new vehicles of 2012.

Exploring the 2012 GMC Terrain Then Test Drive at Borcherding Buick GMC!

Exploring the 2012 GMC Terrain

GMC (and many others) no longer call all SUVs a SUV; some are now crossovers (usually a crossover is a car based SUV-like vehicle). GMC, the smallest General Motors Division, has two crossovers in its 2012 lineup — the Acadia and Terrain (a third, Terrain Denali, joins in 2013). The “true” SUVs are now called trucks (they are truck based). I recently drove a GMC Terrain.
The Terrain is the larger of GMC’s crossover for 2012 and its intended competition are vehicles like the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and Hyundai Santa Fe. The Terrain is 185.3 inches long and rides on a 112.5 inch wheelbase. It weighs 3798 pounds plus depending on model and option; not bad for a SUV, er crossover, but a little portly.
I am not a fan of the styling; too much chrome, too massive a front-end, and too angular for me. The size is decent though — easy to get in and out of and for its interior volume (a total of 63.9 cubic feet) it is relatively small on the outside.
The 2012 model has two engines available; a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6 (the V6 goes to 3.6-liters for 2013). I can see only one reason to go with the four — it is
more fuel efficient but at the expense of towing capacity and performance (let’s face it, its 182 hp and 172 ft-lbs of torque aren’t much to move almost two tons). The V6 is rated at 17-city and 24-highway and that isn’t bad for a vehicle like this. I drove a similar Chevrolet vehicle last year and it mirrored the ’12 Terrain’s mileage. I found that it is easy to exceed the highway figure but the city figure will drag down the combined. (Note to all automotive engineers: Not all driving is on a highway; please find a way to get the city mileage up.) Even with the larger engine the ’13′s mileage stays the same.
One big difference between the 4-cylinder and V6 is the towing capacity. The V6 more than doubles the towable weight to 3,500 pounds. If you plan on towing anything heavier than a basic travel trailer go for the V6.
GMC uses a 6-speed automatic transmission (helps with economy) with either engine. It easily rivals the GM transmissions of old in operation (remember when automatics were trouble free?) but with the world moving to 7- or 8-speed automatics it is time for the domestics to up their game. (Did I actually just diss a very good 6-speed automatic?)
I find many current vehicles to have busy instrument panels. They are way too fussy with too many buttons that aren’t easy to use or intuitive. The Terrain is no different except at least there are some knobs. There is a feature I really liked — the “hoods” over the instrument cluster and radio. It almost eliminated glare and reflection. Excellent!
Crossovers have replaced big 4-door sedans as the vehicle of choice in suburbia. Look around, how many large sedans do you see? And the fuel economy of the crossovers is good for their size. But that’s the rub; it’s good for their size. There was a time when 24-mpg was considered great; now it’s only fair. If we’re going to ever become free of foreign oil we are going to have to develop family size (or North American family size) vehicles with much better fuel economy.
For now, though, the GMC Terrain is a very good choice. I can’t keep up with the average sale price of vehicles. It seems like only yesterday that $20,000 got you a decent set of wheels. (Actually it was a long time ago.) In June 2012 the average transaction price was $30,508. That puts the lowest price Terrain ($26,385) in perspective. Go with the top model (SLT-2 All-Wheel-Drive), load on all the options you can and you are pushing $40,000.

Car tips from Borcherding: A/C or Windows Down?

A/C or Windows Down: Which Method Will Save You Money?

In the summer a car can feel like a hot box. You want to crank the A/C but hesitate since saving every penny counts with gas prices so high.   As temperatures rise, the question will be, air conditioning or windows down?
Both methods will keep the car cool while driving but both are also rumored to be gasoline wasters. So which method will keep your tank filled longer and will ensure you’re comfortable on your road trip?
And the winner is… well it depends on how you’re driving and what kind of car you’re driving.
Older cars air conditioning units put more pressure on the engine and is much less efficient than newer car’s air conditioning units. That being the case, an older car’s air conditioning unit will waste more gas then a newer model.
If you are driving through town or in stop and go traffic, keeping the windows down and the air conditioner off will save gas. If you are driving on a highway or at high speeds, keeping the windows up and the air conditioning on is the way to go.  Keeping the windows down when driving at high speeds will create more drag on the car, which will reduce fuel economy.  At these high speeds it is more practical to turn on the A/C unit. The car is the most aerodynamic when all of the windows are rolled up. Drivers don’t have to feel bad about trying to keep cool this summer, as long as they know their options.

2013 GMC Terrain Denali Test Drive one in Cincinnati at Borcherding!

2013 GMC Terrain Denali Test Drive

On-sale date: August 2012
Price: $35,350 to $42,000-plus
Competitors: Acura RDX, Infiniti JX
Powertrains: 2.4-liter inline-four-cylinder, 182-hp, 172 lb-ft of torque; 3.6-liter V-6, 301-hp, 272 lb-ft; six-speed automatic; FWD or AWD
EPA fuel economy (city/hwy): 22/32 (four-cylinder with FWD); 16/23 (V-6 with AWD)
What’s new: GMC extends its popular Denali luxury sub-brand to the smallest vehicle in its lineup, the Terrain crossover (CUV in GM parlance), accompanied by an upgraded V-6 with more displacement (3.6 vs 3.0 liters). The larger engine is good for 14 additional horses and 22 percent more torque while returning the same EPA fuel economy ratings as the outgoing Terrain V-6. You can get a Denali edition without the big engine or the big engine without the Denali trim upgrades outside and in, but GMC expects the combination to be the most popular.
Tech tidbit: The invisible hand that may do the most to distinguish this from other Terrains is the dual-flow damper used in the front suspension. Valving in these shock absorbers varies with the rate of the piston travel, delivering firmer handling response without degrading ride—you get them only in the Denali version. (Chevrolet uses them in Equinox, Terrain’s platform-mate, in a new FE2 performance suspension.)

Driving character: We drove V-6-powered AWD Terrain Denalis on challenging two-lane roads in northern Michigan and found that the more powerful engine and the upgraded suspension gave us a surprisingly nimble and responsive drive, especially considering the vehicle’s 2-ton weight. GM tuned the Terrain Denali to feel the most “truck-like” of all its CUVs on this platform, however, so steering effort from the hydraulic power-assisted V-6 (the four-cylinder gets electric assist) is relatively high. Still, you can hustle the Terrain Denali along narrow country lanes, and the drivetrain makes short work of passing the dawdling sightseers and motorhomes. Or, since the Terrain Denali has a 3500-pound towing capacity, hook up a camper or boat and join the caravans of country cottagers.
Favorite detail: Denali trim gives you an eight-way power seat on the passenger side, while the fore-and-aft adjustability of the rear seat (on all Terrains, not just Denali) makes it easy to switch between carrying cargo or passengers back there.
Driver’s grievance: At 4204 pounds in the configuration we drove, this is one hefty five-seater. As a consequence, the only way to get decent mileage is to opt for the smaller motor. Buying a Terrain Denali with all the bells and whistles could only be considered an economy move—on price or fuel efficiency—if you were downsizing from a Yukon.
The Bottom line: The only functional upgrades you get for paying for the Denali trim are blind-spot warning, cross-traffic alerts, the trick dampers, and the power passenger seat—and some of those subject to optional add-on costs. So buyers will have to love the cosmetic treatment of the package to pony up for it. That treatment includes satin-chrome accents on the exterior, 18-inch wheels with the four and 19s with the V-6, and smoked mahogany highlights inside, plus a handsome soft-touch French stitched leather dashboard cap. All these touches dress up the boxy Terrain in ways that will appeal to Denali loyalists. And GMC certainly knows what it’s doing. The brand has sold more than a half-million vehicles with Denali badges on them since the first Yukon Denali in 1999.

Top Midsize Crossover is.. The Buick Enclave!

Buick Enclave named top midsize crossover in quality study

The Buick Enclave, among a trio of crossover vehicles produced at General Motors Co.’s Lansing Delta Township assembly plant, was named the top midsize crossover in this year’s Initial Quality Study by market research firm J.D. Power and Associates.
The Enclave is the only locally produced vehicle to earn honors in the study, released Wednesday. It measures vehicle appeal and design and production quality. Among large crossovers, the Ford Expedition topped a segment GM historically has won.
GM earned a total of four awards.
The Enclave “performed at an exceptional level this year,” said David Sargent, J.D. Power’s vice president of global automotive.
J.D. Power, based in Westlake Village, Calif., has issued the study for 26 years as a gauge of quality among new vehicles. This year, 26 of the 34 measured brands improved and overall quality increased by about 5 percent from a year ago, to 102 problems per 100 vehicles, the firm said.
“The industry is producing better-quality vehicles than it has ever done in the past,” Sargent said, adding that the rate of improvement is the fastest since 2009. “This year’s vehicles are even better than last year’s.”
Customers increasingly are reporting problems with their vehicles’ multimedia systems, according to the study. Problems with hands-free technology systems, in particular, are up 137 percent in the last four years.
